Stephen Giovannoni and his lab group received an award of $3,115,070 from Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Marine Microbiology Initiative to study the dynamics of key groups of abundant marine planktonic microorganisms, and to provide a deeper understanding of how populations of these bacteria change in space and time in natural marine systems, how they have evolved to cope with low nutrient levels, and how these ubiquitous and numerically predominant groups impact marine biogeochemical cycles.

Walt Ream receives the 2007 Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award

Dr. Ream is acknowledged for his commitment to laboratory teaching. Several years ago, he (with Kate Field) developed the MCB late summer intensive short course in molecular biology for incoming grad students and outside clients. In recent years, he has steadily evolved MB311 (Writing Intensive Curriculum) as a lab for MB majors that includes some near-cutting edge experiments and critiqued writing exercises. MB311 has an almost cult status of popularity with our majors.

Jerri Bartholomew receives the College of Agricultural Sciences 2007 F.E. Price Agricultural Research Foundation Award for Excellence in Research

Dr. Bartholomew has described the complex life cycles of parasites that infect wild fish of the Pacific Northwest. Her work on Ceratomyxa shasta and its effect on the health of the endangered salmon run of the Klamath River has provided critical scientific information that is informing political decisions that will determine the fate of these fish.
