YarwoodStephanie Yarwood, Instructor

The Emil Truog Award

The Emil Truog Award is given each year by the Soil Science Society of America. This award is designed to recognize a recent Ph.D. degree recipient who has made an outstanding contribution to soil science as evidenced by his/her Ph.D. dissertation. This award is supported through funds from the Emil Truog estate.  Award recipients will receive their award at the national meeting (this year to be held in Houston, Texas on October 6th).

Linda Bruslind, Senior Instructor, receives the 2007 Dar Reese Excellence in Advising Award.

Dr. Linda Bruslind's work with majors is important in attracting and keeping MB students in our major, and in keeping them on-track to be successful when they leave OSU for further studies or positions. Her work in advising is shared by our other Senior Instructor, Mary Burke, who received the Dar Reese award in 1994.

Walt Ream receives the 2007 Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award.

Dr. Ream is acknowledged for his commitment to laboratory teaching. Several years ago, he (with Kate Field) developed the MCB late summer intensive short course in molecular biology for incoming grad students and outside clients. In recent years, he has steadily evolved MB311 (Writing Intensive Curriculum) as a lab for MB majors that includes some near-cutting edge experiments and critiqued writing exercises. MB311 has an almost cult status of popularity with our majors.

Microbiologist Professor, Peter Bottomley, has been awarded the Inaugural Oregon State University Graduate School's 2006 "Excellence in Mentoring Award". Twenty-two former and current graduate students and three OSU professors wrote testimonial letters of nomination in support of Peter Bottomley for this award. Peter has served on over 140 graduate committees.

"During his career at OSU, Dr. Bottomley has consistently conducted research that has emphasized the training of graduate students. Judging from my observations of interactions with graduate students, I suspect he has deliberately chosen this path, in distinction from conducting research with technicians or postdoctoral associates. He has a deep affinity with graduate students and the special stage in which they find themselves in navigating their future careers. He mixes humor, enthusiasm, a needling encouragement or incitement to extend themselves with real personal concern in guiding his students." Dr. Theo Dreher, Chair, Department of Microbiology

Steve Giovannoni (pictured at left) has been selected as the third recipient of the Emile F. Pernot Distinguished Professorship in Microbiology. The selection was recommended by a committee comprised of professors both within and outside the department and endorsed by Deans Dutson and Bloomer, with the appointment made by Interim Provost Sabah Randhawa. This is a five year term starting January 1, 2005. John Fryer and Jo-Ann Leong were the previous recipients.

Dr. Janine Trempy: Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor 2006. This award encourages and recognizes outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. This campus-wide recognition was presented to Janine at University Days.

Dr. Linda Bruslind: Olaf Boedtker Award for Excellence in Academic Advising was presented to Dr. Bruslind at the annual College of Science Awards.

Dr. Chelsea Byrd: The inaugural OSU Alumni Association Young Alumni Award. Chelsea earned a B.S. degree in Microbiology from OSU in 2001, and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology in 2005, working in Dennis Hruby's lab. She is a scientist in the Corvallis laboratory of SIGA Technologies, where she works on antiviral and anti-infective drug discovery and vaccine development — primarily defending against bioterrorism attacks. Chelsea's doctoral dissertation was chosen by the Council of Graduate Schools and University Microfilms as one of the five best dissertations in the world in life sciences for 2005.  (article in Oregon Stater)

Katharine Bateman:  Goldwater Scholarship Award.    The Goldwater Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science, and engineering students who are nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. One hundred seventy-four of the Scholars are men, 143 are women, and virtually all intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their degree objective. Twenty-eight Scholars are mathematics majors, 223 are science and related majors, 54 are majoring in engineering, and 12 are computer science majors. Many of the Scholars have dual majors in a variety of mathematics, science, engineering, and computer disciplines.

Undergraduate Katharine Bateman's Career Goal: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. Conduct research that will contribute to the discovery of chemotherapeutic agents to treat bacterial or viral infections.
