Research, Teaching and Internships

RESEARCH


If you are interested in doing research at OSU, you should find out which
faculty are doing work that you are interested in and contact them directly.

You can get microbiology credit for doing research with a microbiology faculty member or an adjunct professor in microbiology. If you want to get credit, you must get the professor's approval on a restricted course form. The requirements are given below:

MB 401, 403, and 405

1. All students who sign up for MB 401, 403, or 405 are expected to spend a minimum of 3 hours per week for 10 weeks (or an equivalent number of hours in the summer) for one hour credit.

2. Prior to the start of each project, the student will write a statement of goals, methods and expected results along with an outline of the project. This document should be 1-2 typewritten pages and be presented to the supervising faculty member.

3. At the end of the project, a summary report, of 2-3 typewritten pages, must prepared and submitted to the supervising faculty before a grade can be issued. This document should include a) a short description of the project, b) methods employed, c) results obtained and d) conclusions reached.

4. A copy of the final report should be kept in the student's file.

TEACHING

You can also be an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in Microbiology lab courses. If interested, you must contact Linda Bruslind. The requirements are listed below.
MB 406:
1. Students are expected to spend a minimum of 3 hours per week for 10 weeks (or an equivalent number of hours in the summer) for one hour credit.

2. You will be graded as a teaching assistant based on the following criteria:

Attendance at the laboratory and laboratory meetings 

  • Participation with students
  • Helping with set up and clean up.
  • Helping with grading of exams, notebooks, etc. - whatever is specifically required for the course that you help with.
  • Coming to lab prepared.
  • Delivery of one lead-in
  • MB 230 TA's signed up for 2 credits will be required to perform an additional hour of work/week such as: 
     - Preparing racks of tubes for cultures
    - Filling pipette cans
    - Filling pots with soil
    - Cleaning microscopes
    - Helping with grading in MB 230.

INTERNSHIPS

OSU Howard Hughes Medical Institute Grants for Undergraduate Research (HHMI) - Each summer HHMI awards more than 40 OSU students funding for their own research including a stipend.  Research projects can be anything in the life sciences at OSU (not limited to medical).  Contact Linda Bruslind for more information. 

 

Undergraduate Research, Innovation, Scholarship and Creativity (URISC) Grants are available each term to all OSU students to support reseach projects.

ZUCCAIRE UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER 2009 INTERNSHIPS IN PARIS

These 10-week internships at the Institut Pasteur, one of the world's leading private, nonprofit centers for infectious disease research, offer hands-on laboratory experience to undergraduates contemplating a scientific career.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Living allowance is $400 per week. Undergraduate Fellowships in Marine Science,
Oceanography and Global Climate Change


TENTATIVE DATES: September 3 to November 26, 2008

The Bermuda Institute for Ocean Sciences has received National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) funding to support 8 fellowships for undergraduate student research at BIOS during the 2008 fall* semester (TENTATIVE DATES: arrive on September 3, 2008 - depart on November 26, 2008). Students will design and conduct independent projects under faculty supervision within several research areas including:

  • Biology, chemistry and physics of the open ocean
  • Biology, physiology and biochemistry of reef building corals and reef ecosystems
  • Aspects of the molecular biology of marine organisms
  • Environmental chemistry of Bermuda's atmosphere and inshore waters
  • Effects and consequences of global environmental change

Applications will be accepted until the program is full.
Initial selection of participants will begin May 30, 2008.

MB 410

Students interested in doing an Internship with a company need to make arrangements with their adviser before they start. The student can only get internship credit if they are doing some unique project for the company in addition to regular duties. The students will need to provide the following information:

- Company at which internship will occur.
- Time period of internship.
- How many hours per week did you spend with the company?
- Describe in detail your responsibilities during this internship.
- What will be your special project

At the end of the internship and before a grade can be issued the student needs to turn in a written report to the adviser that answers the following questions:

- What did you learn from this experience that you had not been exposed to during your academic training?
- What did you contribute to the company during this time that they would not have done without your assistance?
- Give a detailed description of the project you did, methods used, results and conclusions.

- What mentoring did you receive and from whom?

A mentor from the company needs to complete the following on the student:
