International Opportunities

International Programs

Many microbiology students choose to take advantage of the excellent international programs at OSU. Most financial aid can be used on these programs and students can also earn OSU credit. The most appropriate College of Science study abroad programs are in Mexico, New Zealand, and Great Britain, but the Office of International Education also runs many other study abroad programs. OSU also offers a unique International Degree and IE3 International Internships. Applicants should have an OSU cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a 3.00 GPA in their major. There are numerous scholarship opportunities for studing abroad.

National Student Exchange

OSU students can exchange to other U.S. schools for up to a year while paying OSU tuition. Visit the Career Services website or call (737-3654) for details.

New Zealand Study Abroad

The University of Auckland's exchange program offers courses at all levels enabling students to develop skills in environmental ecology and management, as well as marine science. Students can also take courses at the internationally renowned Leigh Marine Laboratory. Contact the College of Science at 737-4811 or Kidder Hall 128 for more details. Great Britain Study Abroad

Lancaster University and Nottingham University in England are well suited to science students. They have extensive offerings in environmental and ecological studies. The exchange to the University of Bangor, Wales also works well for science students, particularly for marine biology. Contact the College of Science at 737-4811 or Kidder Hall 128 for more details. Other Study Abroad

OSU has other programs in Australia, China, Ecuador, England France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Mexico (ones with good science offerings are underlined). For more information call 737-3006.

International Internships

IE3 Global Internships is an OSU program that facilitates locating international internship opportunities, as well as scholarships, and loans for participation. For information, visit the website or call 737-6464.

The International Degree

OSU offers a unique undergraduate International Degree (ID). This concurrent baccalaureate degree is obtainable only in conjunction with another undergraduate degree. In addition to the standard requirements, the ID candidate must: (1) take an additional 32 credits; (2) demonstrate achievement or proficiency in a foreign language equal to the completion of the fourth year; (3) spend a minimum of one ten-week term abroad in an approved program, and complete an integrative senior thesis. The ID affords a student the opportunity to develop a global perspective within the context of her/his academic area.
