Microbiology Graduate Student Journal Club
Microbiology Graduate Student Journal Club meets every other Friday from noon to 1 PM in Nash 404. It is designed to encourage scholarship amongst peers in a low pressure environment. Presenters should read the article thoroughly enough to present the major research findings and lead discussion. Each student should present at least once each year.
Current Year
This year, students who were unable to present last year will schedule for the first set of presentations, beginning October 9. Students who are new to the program this year will each present during this academic year (before June 4, 2010); additionally, new students will confer with a faculty mentor on their paper. The mentor can be any faculty member or post-doctoral student in the department who can serve as an educated resource for the chosen article. The mentor will help new students choose or vet a paper, as well as attending the journal club for which they are mentoring.

Past Years
Important Notes for Presenting
Good articles should:
- Be microbially relevant, and ideally appeal to more than one microbial discipline (Environmental Microbiology, Pathogenic Microbiology, Virology, Biochemical Microbiology, and Genomics)
- Be recent (not more than 2 years old)
- Not relate to your research project
- Not be "double dipped" (from a class or other presentation)
Some changes from previous years will be kept in place. Foremost, the Department has graciously agreed to provide pizza. Another important change this year is the option to conclude your presentation time with a research problem/achievement that you wish to discuss with only other graduate students present in the last 15 minutes.
Email Matthew Quinn to schedule your presentation.
Perks:
- Free food (pizza!)
- Making yourself smarter
- Departmental solidarity
- Fabulous prizes
- Schadenfreude (knowing that somewhere, some time, some other journal club is talking about your research....)
Downsides:
- An hour of your time
- Um.... No PCR song?
